Kinsale
Tuesday, we traveled through County Wicklow and into County Cork. Our final destination was the charming little harbor town of Kinsale. We arrived in time to explore the little town and have dinner at the White House pub. After dinner, several of our group went to An Seanachai pub to hear Liam'O. He was one of the best muscians we heard on the trip. He did many traditional ballads and some more modern material as well.
Wednesday morning, Don Herlihy led a tour of Kinsale and explained the historical significance of the town and harbor from medieval times to the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 which occurred not far from Kinsale. Don was fascinating and one of those unique and wonderful local guides that ETBD tours often have.
Catherine, Gretchen, Nancy and Gary had lunch at the Fishy Fishy Cafe. It was one of the best meals we had on the trip. Wonderful sea food as you might guess from the name. Kinsale has many fine places to eat. This is the best place on the trip for a food splurge, in our opinion.
Many of the buildings and houses in Kinsale are painted with bright colors. However, this is a relatively recent trend and more traditional houses and buildings are painted white.
We toured the Charles Fort which is one of the finest remaining examples of a star-shaped bastion fort in Europe. The star design was created to provide a defense againt the large cannons that were being used at this time. The fort was built in the 1670's and remained in use until 1922.
Kathy Soo O'Brien was our guide for the Charles Fort. She was loaded with information and told us the Legend of the Apparition of Charles Fort.
