Cliffs of Moher
The Cliffs of Moher rise 650 feet out of the sea in some places and stretch for five miles along the western coast of Ireland. It was a clear sunny day and the sea was a beautiful blue. The Cliffs of Moher are one of those natural wonders that pictures cannot do justice. Notice the size of the people on the top of the cliff to the left.
We drove from Dingle to the River Shannon where we took the ferry across to Kilmer. From Kilmer we traveled to Kilkee. Kilkee is a beautiful little village on the sea where we stopped for lunch. Stephen bought winkles for us to taste. The small snail like winkles received mixed reviews from our group. After lunch at Joe's Place in Kilkee, we drove to the Cliffs of Moher.
It was a little spooky to walk along the edge of the 650 foot cliff to get a picture .
Making our way to Galway from the Cliffs of Moher, we stopped at The Burren, a ten square mile limestone plateau in northwest County Clare. Beautiful wild flowers grow in the small amounts of sod in the cracks of the limestone. The Burren is a unique geological structure which was inhabited by prehistoric man as far back as 6,000 years ago. One's first impression is that you have landed on the moon, but then you notice the gorgious wildflowers clinging to the earth between the stones.
The Bloody Cranesbill is a striking plant that is common on The Burren.
