We took the tour bus from Bacharach to St. Goar to tour the Rheinfels Castle. The castle was built in 1245 and is now in ruins but one gets a feel for the enormity of the structure. There are great views of the Rhine from the castle.
After touring Rheinfels Castle, we caught the tram back to St. Goar for lunch at the Hotel Hauser. We had some good broiled trout, potatoes, and a nice beer. After lunch, we walked around St. Goar and looked at beer steins and cuckoo clocks but didn't buy any. We went inside a very attractive Lutheran church near the Hotel Hauser.`
We took the Koln-Dusseldorfer boat back to Bacharach. This section of the Rhine has several castles perched along the upper part of the valley and some have been converted into hotels. The cruise was beautiful as we passed old castles, vinyards, rich green foliage on the hillside, boats and barges on the Rhine, small villages next to the river, and the Loreley rock.
